OperServ’s DEFCON & Levels Information

IRC4Fun’s Services have a network protection feature to combat wide-spread and heavy attacks aimed directly at IRC4Fun and/or it’s channels and users.  This feature (called DEFCON) is seldom used, as in most cases, IRC4Fun Staff can handle cases of abuse with more appropriate means.

However, sometimes there will be “heavy” or “automated” attacks towards IRC4Fun which can overwhelm individual staff members who may require the help of Services to limit the effects of the attacks.

Defcon Level Resulting Measures
5 Normal – No restrictions or enhanced security measures.
4 Escalating – No Nickname Registrations or Memos may be sent.
3 Defensive – No Channel/Nickname Registrations or Memos may be sent, Channels will be set to chanmodes +MR (Only identified users may talk or join).
2 Urgent – Services will silently ignore all non-IRC operators, No Channel/Nickname Registrations or Memos may be sent, Channels will be set to chanmodes +MR (Only identified users may talk or join).
1 Lockdown – Connecting users will be AKILLed for 5 minutes, Services will silently ignore all non-IRC operators, No Channel/Nickname Registrations or Memos may be sent, Channels will be set to chanmodes +MR (Only identified users may talk or join).

OperServ’s DEFCON & Notes

  • Channel Modes, set by OperServ, will be unset when DEFCON resumes normal level (5).  (Channel Operators are free to [re]set the modes, lock them or others with ChanServ, or even set or unset these modes during attacks.)
  • DEFCON should always be used as a last resort when there is no better alternative.
  • In the event that you have to enable DEFCON, you are responsible for adjusting the level as the attack either stops or continues Do NOT set DEFCON levels and walk away.
  • DEFCON AKILLs from Level 1 (Lockdown) will expire after 5 minutes.
  • DEFCON will deactivate automatically after 15 minutes if not adjusted to lower levels or deactivated by Staff. (However, this is upsetting to users — so monitor the attack and adjust the levels as necessary.  Do not set a DEFCON level and then walk away.)
